TRANSDRIFT II

« back

The TRANSDRIFT II expedition was carried out onboard the Russian research vessel Professor Multanovskiy from July 22 to October 16, 1994. Professor Multanovskiy departed from the port of St. Petersburg on July 22, headed for Kiel where the German scientific equipment was loaded on board. The next stop was the town of Murmansk for the purpose of customs declarations. From there Professor Multanovskiy sailed to the Laptev Sea along the Northern Sea Route via Dikson where the German scientists joined the expedition. Due to engine trouble in Dikson and very severe ice conditions in Vilkitskiy Strait – it being not even navigable for Russian nuclear icebreakers during August – the expedition arrived to the Laptev Sea on September 3, much later than anticipated.

After more than three weeks of successful research, Professor Multanovskiy left the Laptev Sea on September 26 with the support of the Russian icebreaker Vaygach. Customs declaration was once again carried out in Murmansk before the expedition headed back for Kiel where the ship berthed alongside the GEOMAR quay on October 16, 1994.

The primary objectives of the expedition were to investigate the pathways of river discharge by means of oceanographic, ecological, chemical, and sedimentological parameters and to differentiate the sediments and variability of the rivers flowing into the Laptev Sea during the Holocene. A comprehensive interdisciplinary working program was carried out at 102 stations between 10 and 55 m water depth.

The main target areas of the expedition were located in the eastern Laptev Sea, north of the Lena Delta, and in the Anabar-Khatanga Valley.
